Last week, the Center for Sports hosted "NIKE: JUST DO IT. The Story Behind the Branding, Marketing, and PR Powerhouse". The event featured VP of North American Sporting Goods and Point Park alum Ed Haberle, as well as Senior Director Account Brand in Sporting Goods, Laura Kosmalski. The event was really successful as many students came to hear these top execs speak about one of the most recognized brands in the world and have the chance to win a Nike Fuelband!
Ed and Laura's presentation focused on how Nike came to be the biggest brand in sports and how it maintains that status today. Their main focus is on greatness and innovation. "To be innovative, you always have to be a step ahead, " Ed said.
The presentation also featured a lot of great Nike videos from the past and present including the famous "Bo knows" commercial and a clip of Nike's mission in greatness. It was so interesting to hear Ed and Laura speak about a brand that we all know and love. It was especially great to listen to and meet with Ed, who was once in our shoes as a Point Park student and is now living his passion at Nike.
Ed preached that NIKE listens to athletes first, insisting that their input and feedback is crucial in the development of their products. Nike focuses on providing inspiration and innovation to every athlete and believes that EVERY person is an athlete. The brand centers around the teen athlete, which means that the company must always be changing and evolving. "We are always planning. We always try to outdo ourselves," said Laura.
This was an extremely beneficial opportunity for all of the students who came to see Ed and Laura speak. The Center is looking forward to our next event on November 13th featuring two Point Park alums who have been extremely successful in the world of minor league baseball. Make sure to mark your calendars for 1PM and come to the event in Room 701 of the Student Center!
