This past Tuesday, the Center welcomed their first guest speaker of the semester: Terry Kalna. Mr. Kalna was recently hired as the new Senior Vice President of Sales and Broadcasting for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
A Greensburg, PA native, Terry Kalna grew up playing hockey; that’s where he found his niche. As a former youth and prep school player, it was always his dream to work for the game he loves. This, however, isn’t where he started. Prior to joining the Penguins, Mr. Kalna spent eight years with International Speedway Corporation (sister company to NASCAR) as a Managing Director. But, sometimes it is necessary to move on. Do you know what you want to do? Now, you either make those decisions to go or focus on learning more. Plus, sometimes all it takes is a little luck and timing to achieve your long-time goal.
As Senior Vice President of Sales and Broadcasting, it is Kalna’s job to make the most of the organization’s two valuable resources: time and people. In turn, you can create and deliver value. You must always remember to make people’s lives better. This is exactly what Mr. Kalna stressed in his lecture.
While he hated school, Kalna acquired all the necessary skills to develop as a successful business professional: critical thinking, leadership, public speaking, and working with numbers. Things where he missed the mark? English and Law School.
Before the afternoon was over, Terry Kalna left every student with some great advice. Aside from the usual don’t forget to network and definitely secure an internship (which is actually a 10 week job interview), Kalna believes we should read for self-development (like the Harvard Business Review), realize that no one owes you anything, and understand that everything matters.
“You can do anything that you want to do...in your work life.”--Terry Kalna.
