Over the past few months, I cannot stop asking myself where I would be right now had I not gotten involved with The Center for Sports Media and Marketing. It is because of the Center that I was able to go to San Diego and attend the 2014 Winter Meetings, and it was also because of the Center that I was able to follow up with a potential employer and fly down to Florida to interview with them in person. It is safe for me to say that The Center played a huge part in my acceptance of the Florida Operations internship with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
It all started in San Diego, when I met up with Trevor Gooby, Senior Director of Florida Operations for the Pittsburgh Pirates, who I had met when I was interning for the Pirates last summer. I was able to talk to him for a few minutes, and tell him I was interested in a summer position with him down in Bradenton, Florida. He told me to submit a resume, and that he would contact me to set up an interview. Unfortunately for me, I was contacted for an interview the day after I had left San Diego, and I thought that all hope was lost for a position in Bradenton.
About a month later, I was offered the opportunity to fly down to Bradenton with other members of The Center for a visit to IMG and to be apart of the event staff for the inaugural Bradenton Riverwalk Regatta. I jumped on the opportunity, and I made sure to reach out to Trevor, who is based out of Bradenton. I emailed him to ask if there was any chance I could meet up with him when I was in Bradenton, and we were able to set up a date and time that worked for both of us.
Fast forward to last Friday, when I had my meeting with Trevor. He started by giving me a tour of Pirate City, the facility that the Pirates and Marauders use for all of their training and practices. This is also where their Florida offices are based. After my tour, I sat down with Trevor in his office, expecting to get interviewed. However, I was pleased to find out that Trevor had no intention of interviewing me at all. He said that he had talked to my internship supervisor in Pittsburgh, and that he had told him I did a great job with the Pirates last summer. It was after he said this that he offered me the internship, and I accepted the offer without even thinking twice.
As a Florida Operation Intern, I will be responsible for assisting the Manager of McKechnie Field with various tasks, including ticket operations, sales, and community relations, along with my main responsibility, which will be stadium operations. I will be spending my summer in Pirate City in their dorms free of charge, which was definitely a huge factor in deciding to come to Bradenton this summer. The Pirates organizational culture is one of the best around, so to have the opportunity to remain within the organization is huge.
I still cannot believe that most my success in finding an internship for this summer is due to The Pittsburgh Center for Sports Media and Marketing. I can’t thank Tom McMillan, Mike Fetchko, or Micky Haney enough for all that they have done for me over the past few months. I truly cannot wait to see what my future holds for me.
