Just this past weekend one of the weirdest finishes to a football game happened at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati. The Pittsburgh Steelers played the Cincinnati Bengals in one of the nastiest games of the past 20 years. Over the past few seasons the rivalry between the Bengals and the Steelers has increased to the point where it is becoming more popular than the Steelers vs Baltimore Ravens; and you could see that Saturday night.
The game was filled with big hits and neither team could seem to get points on the board, the first points came via a Chris Boswell field goal in the second quarter. At the halfway point the game was 6-0 Steelers. The game was a defensive battle all night with many turnovers and questionable hits. The game was very scrappy and there was a lot of pushing and shoving after every play from both sides. As the game progressed you could feel the tension boiling to the point where one side would snap and eventually it did.
In the 3rd quarter the Bengals were driving down the field and were in field goal range when Ryan Shazier tackled Cincinnati running back Gerald Bernard on a questionable hit to the head call that received no penalty, this was when the game got nasty. The Bengals bench was livid after the no call and on the ensuing Steelers drive Ben Roethlisberger was sacked hard by Vontaze Burflict and injured his shoulder. The play was clean in terms of being a legal hit but Burflict had intentions to hit Roethlisberger as hard as he could to retaliate the hit on his running back. After the play the Bengals fans threw trash at Roethlisberger as he was carted to the locker room.
The game began to turn in the Bengals favor at this point in the game and they managed to climb back from a 15 point deficit to take a 16-15 lead with 1:50 left in the game. With no Roethlisberger the odds looked slim for the Steelers and then it got worse when the Steelers turned over the ball with only 1:43 left in the game. The game was practically over at this point.
But the game was just getting started. When the Bengals were running out the clock, Jeremy Hill ran the ball and was tackled by Ryan Shazier who forced a fumble. Then the Steelers got the ball back with 1:36 left in the game. Ben came back in the game and could barely throw the ball but managed to get the Steelers to the 41 yard line when the madness ensued. The next play Ben threw the ball to Antonio Brown who took a helmet to helmet shot from Burflict and received a 15 yard penalty, then Adam Jones of the Bengals got a penalty after the play for shoving a Steeler coach. At this point the Steelers were in field goal range and took the lead 18-16 with :18 left in the game.
The game was unbelievable and Burflict and Jones played very unprofessional games, if they would have kept calm and held their emotions in the Bengals would be playing this week, but they aren’t. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis as well as the city of Cincinnati should be ashamed of how they represented themselves on Saturday night and they got their rightful dues with their 25th consecutive season without a playoff win.
