I can’t but help feel incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to go down to the Baseball Winter Meetings and PBEO job fair in Nashville, Tennessee this year. The PBEO job fair is an internship/job fair for Minor League Baseball teams. If you want to work in baseball, this is a pretty good place to start.
Going down to a job fair like this unprepared would be the worst thing you could do, so thankfully the preparation for this trip was pretty extensive. Every Friday morning at 9 a.m. since October 30th I believe, we’d gather in the Student Center, and do what we needed to do to make sure the seven of us were ready for this trip. Preparations included perfecting our resumes, creating websites, making and ordering business cards, doing mock interviews, working with career services at Point Park, emailing and reaching out to teams we were interested in before we actually went down, and more.
We also were able to get some interesting perspectives and advice from people that knew what to expect down there, and were able to tell us everything we needed to know and be prepared for. Josh Croup, another Student Advisory Board member, went to the Winter Meetings in San Diego last year, so he was able to help tell us exactly what to look for. In mid-November we met with Tom Kayser, the President of MiLB’s Texas League and Point Park alum. And I can’t forget the help we had along the way from Mike Fetchko and Tom McMillan (Co-Directors of the Pittsburgh Center for Sports Media & Marketing, and the ones who really made this all possible), and their grad assistant Kelsey Veydt.
Anyways, the actual trip to Nashville was a very crazy, but very quick one. Seven of us hopped in a mini van, and made the nine-hour trek down. We arrived Saturday evening and left Wednesday morning. Each day we were going from morning to night non-stop, doing everything from applying to jobs, going to interviews, listening to speakers, networking with other people, and more. Our group total got close to 40 interviews collectively, which is amazing. Two of us got job offers so far, and the rest of us are still waiting for teams to make their final decisions. It’s a very nerve-wracking process, but one that I wouldn’t trade for anything. I never thought I’d be able to meet the people I did, interview with the teams I did, and get the experiences down here that I did. But like I said before, there’s no better place to start your career in baseball than down here at the PBEO job fair at the Baseball Winter Meetings.
Again, it’s an unforgettable experience that I wouldn’t trade for anything. I’m beyond appreciative to the Center and Point Park University for sending us on such an incredible trip. I’m so glad to go to a school that gives their students these sorts of opportunities. This trip really made the goals I have for my future seem possible, and I’m very grateful.
