On March 8th, the Center for Sports Media and Marketing gave a select few students the opportunity to visit Root Sports for an unforgettable learning experience. The evening began with Shawn McClintock, the station general manager, giving us an introduction and showing us a video on the history of Root Sports. Then we met the marketing coordinator and Point Park alum Stephanie Spezialetti telling us her career story and answering any of our questions about the business side of television. We then went down to their multi-million dollar control room and studio for a tour of their equipment and what exactly goes into a live production. We were joined down there by two other Point Park alumni Brian Lacek and Craig Hall to tell us their career stories showing all of us that it is possible to make it from where we are now as students to the television industry. We then shadowed the crew as they executed a live production of Penguins Pregame before the Penguins- Islanders game. The people that are interested in being on-air talent also had the opportunity to meet Rob King and Jay Caufield. But, for people like myself, I couldn’t stay away from the control room and all the intriguing equipment. The experience was nothing short of incredible and it is because of groups like the Pittsburgh Center for Sports Media and Marketing that make this happen.
